And if you are looking for a destination that offers both, the charming little city named Lindau is the answer. This beautiful area offers so many ways to spend your vacation that will never be sorry you chose the city called "the most beautiful region of Germany."Near the intersection of Austrian, German and Swiss borders, Lindau is an old Bavarian island-city nestled in the eastern part of Lake Constance, about 150 km southwest of Munich. The old town is situated on a 0.68 sq km island, connected to the mainland by bridge and railway line. Lively and colorful streets, romantic alleys and some truly unique attractions of Bavaria and even Germany - all you can find it here in Lindau.
Once you get into town, you should know that you have a chance to see one of the most beautiful ports in Europe. The biggest attraction on Lake Constance is the entrance to the harbor where one side stands six foot monument of a lion, a work of sculptor Johan van Halbing and on the other side is the lighthouse. Although it is fascinating to see during the day, no less attractive is the night show when it 6000-bulbs light up.
One of the most impressive and characteristic buildings in Bavaria is the Alte Rathaus (Old Town Hall). Completed in 1436 in the Gothic style, and then modified century in Renaissance style, this landmark has been beautifully preserved. The paintings in the oriel displayed the Ten Commandments and scenes from the German Imperial Parliament.
Lindau is a good starting point for excursions in the Alps. The famous gondola Santis in Switzerland, the Center for Marine Life in Constance, Mainau Island in Lake Constance, the beautiful castle and old town Salem Mirsburg - they can all be reached within a day of Lindau.
During the summer months, the beaches of the lake are filled with tourists who prefer mountain sun. Cycling around Lake Constance, hikes, hiking, sailing boat or rent one for a walk are some of the options you have if you're not a fan of bathing in the lake. Furthermore, Lindau is only an hour away from ski resorts in Germany and Switzerland, making it cheaper for accommodation during the winter.
